Before deciding on a strategy for marketing your medical practice, first determine your target market. There are several factors you must consider when selecting your target market. In health care marketing, it is not unusual to have several different target markets for each of the different medical products and services you provide.

If you have a family practice or if you’re a general dentist for example, your target market will be significantly different than that of a specialized practice such as a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist. While there may be some common factors within the two target markets, the differences will be your defining factors.

There are three critical factors that should be considered when defining the target markets for your medical practice.

Location: Most prospective patients will want relatively quick and easy access to healthcare. It is unlikely that they will drive an hour or more for an earache or a toothache. Therefore, a family doctor’s target market is going to include prospective patients within a 7-10 mile radius. For a specialist, a prospective patient may be willing to drive further for care, if that specialist has effectively demonstrated how she can meet that prospective patients needs using effective health care marketing strategies. As such, a specialist like a cosmetic surgeon or aesthetics doctor would have a broader target market in terms of location.

Demographics: This would include the age, gender, income and possibly occupation of a prospective patient. A family doctor may want to target younger families in hopes of building a long-term relationship with them. Target age groups that will give you the greatest opportunity to handle the types of cases you desire to treat, and will help grow your practice long-term. A surgeon with a focus on cosmetic surgery may find the best age demographic for them is women 30 – 50 with a higher income level in professional occupations. Remember, the markets you select are going to depend on the types of products and services you offer.

Needs: You must also consider your local community’s needs when developing your target market. Let’s take a family practitioner for example. A family may want a provider that offers comprehensive care for the entire family so that all family members can be treated by the same physician. If you are capable of treating an entire family from childhood on, you should consider targeting families with children of a certain age and above. If there is a void for physicians specializing in special needs patients, and you treat special needs patients, include these patients in your target market. Similarly, if you are located near a large population of seniors and have products and services that can meet their medical needs, consider including them in your target market.

When brainstorming potential markets for your medical practice, look closely at your current patient panel. Your existing patients are a good source for determining which of the areas listed above will be most important when defining your target market. Look at the location, demographics and needs of your best current patients and then seek to target prospective patients who are similar to them. You can do this by learning more about your current patients using surveys to obtain more specific data on your “ideal” patient’s behaviors and needs.

Your strategic medical marketing plan can only be successful if you accurately determine your target market. Once you have identified your target market, all of your efforts must be focused on bringing that market through your practice doors.

With a clearly identified target market your health care marketing plan should focus on appropriate media within that area. Community or neighborhood newspapers are good places to consider if your target market consists of many seniors. If your target market has a much younger base, then you may consider advertising online.

For services like cosmetic surgery, your target market may be reached through certain magazines or websites. Knowing where potential patients are likely to be or read or surf will help you maximize your exposure to the kind of people you are targeting with your health care marketing plan.

Spending money to advertise in places your target market is not likely to see or read is just wasting valuable resources. You get more bang for your buck by carefully considering each and every possibility for exposure and its potential to bring you patients.

A physician’s marketing plan fails or succeeds depending on the accuracy of what you consider when determining your target market. Take the time necessary to have a firm understanding of who it is you want to walk through the doors of your practice and then use that understanding to move forward confidently toward your goals.

Postcards can be an effective part of your marketing program

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 26-10-2009

Before You Begin Writing

Before you write a single word of your message, you need to figure out your audience and your goal. These are critical steps, because later you’ll be using words to bridge the gap between your audience and your goal.

Start with your audience. Make a list of the things that might be important to them. Then narrow it down to what you think is the most important element. Use that item for your headline and all throughout your copy.

Professional Experience Not Required

Persuasive writing is more about human understanding than writing skill. The most successful copywriters didn’t get to where they are by being literary wizards. They got there by understanding what motivates people, and being able to write to those emotions.

The most effective marketing copy uses clear, simple language and avoids complexity altogether. Complex language just gets in the way of emotion.

Pick up any Sharper Image catalog and see what I mean. These catalogs sell extremely well for three reasons. They have neat products. They have great photos of those products. And they have straightforward descriptions that aim for the reader’s emotions.

One Idea Per Postcard

You won’t have a lot of space on your postcard, so don’t spread your message too thin. One fully developed topic is a hundred times better than five half-developed topics.

By focusing on one product (or service, or idea, or topic), you can develop it in a way that is more likely to generate a response. You could mention the primary benefits, give a testimonial or two, show some photos, make a strong offer and provide a call to action.

But you can’t do all that while covering several topics. So save the multi-topic approach for your brochures and website.

People request brochures, but they don’t request postcards. For that reason, they give postcards a lot less attention. A quick glance may be all you get. So keep your postcard focused and to the point — one idea per postcard.

Use Strong, Clear Headlines

Headlines can make or break a marketing postcard, depending on how they’re used. Remember, you want to capture your prospects’ attention based on their initial glance. A glance is all you get, so don’t waste it. Tell them right away what you’re offering and what it can do for them.

Sell the Next Step

Before you can begin writing your postcard message, you need to figure out the next step in your sales process. If your goal is to convince the reader that your product or service is superior to all others in its class, your postcard will probably come up short. That’s a lot to ask of an 8″ x 5″ piece of card stock.

People will learn about the quality of your product or service by experiencing it firsthand. They won’t learn it (or believe it) from a single postcard.

There is a sales path to be followed, and the marketing postcard is the first (or sometimes second) step along that path. That’s the job it should perform — moving the reader forward in the sales process.

For example:

* If you’re selling software, the postcard could point to a free 30-day trial available on a web page somewhere.

* If you’re selling your real estate services, the postcard could mention a free report about area schools.

* If you’re in the financial services industry, you could use postcards to invite people to a money-saving seminar.

Write Naturally

When creating your postcard marketing message, try to write in a natural tone that reflects the way you speak. That doesn’t mean your message should be full of slang, but that it should sound like one person talking to another (not like a professor lecturing a class).

Test, Rewrite, and Test Again

Eugene Schwartz, the author of Breakthrough Advertising, said it best: “There are no answers in direct mail except test answers.” Following the best practices of postcard marketing will put you on a base level of success. But to rise above that level, you have to test every aspect of your postcards – and that includes the message.

Free Internet Marketing For Psychologists and other Therapists

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 26-10-2009

It may surprise you that more searches for therapists occur online than through the Yellow Pages. Many therapists have already abandoned the Yellow Pages for being expensive and not yielding results. There are increasing numbers of people who say, “If your not on the internet, I’m not interested.” Look for this to continue to increase at an exponential rate.

Marketing yourself is a public service. This means letting people know how you can be of service to them. Your internet presence allows people looking for someone to help them solve whatever pain they are in. If you have no internet presence, many people will not find you and determine if you may be of service to them. Marketing is making your presence known. It is NOT a hard sell, trying to ram anything down anyone’s throat. Advertising is presenting yourself mostly to people who aren’t interested in what you have to offer. This is why most print advertising does not yield clients.

An internet presence can be started (or expanded) for free, using these methods.

Getting yourself on free listing sites

Many sites have both free and paid listings. Generally, start with the free listing. I found my free listing showing on the first page of Google search within one week. Begin with seeing if your professional organization has listings. These are often free. Next check with other mental health groups you belong to and see if they have listings, ex. Anxiety Disorders of America Association. Some are free. Some have additional charges.

Find the listing sites for Google business. This will also get you listed on Google maps, which show at the top of Google searches. Also do this for Yahoo business. Find other business and mental health listing sites by Googling “free business listing sites,” free mental health listing sites,” etc.

Create a free website

Prior to creating a website, create a professional profile on one of the social network sites, such as Linkedin.com or Biznik.com. The consensus is that a website is now a necessity for therapists. It will greatly increase your presence and legitimacy beyond having your profile listed in different places. One can quickly create a simple site. You will want to present information that will speak to the pain of those clients you would most like to see. This will attract your “Ideal client” much more than if you describe yourself as a “caring person who provides a safe place,” etc. Conventional wisdom is that your content is 80% about the client and 20% about yourself.

Don’t wait until you have a perfect site planned. Better to get a functional site up, asap. Websites are dynamic entities. You will want to refine, probably add, and sometimes delete what you began with. How you write gives others a sense of who and what you are. Be sure to include a head shot photo of yourself with a big smile.

Begin with your DSL provider and see what they offer. Google “free websites.” Look for templates that you like, flexibility, expandability, etc. Many of the free sites will also let you expand your site, more, for a monthly fee. Most options will cost between $5 and $10 a month.

Consider creating a free blog

Some will start a blog, rather than a website. Generally, a website is more versatile and should be your first priority. A blog will probably serve you best, the more specific it is, i.e., focuses on a niche, such as ADHD, OCD, etc. Two popular free sites to start a blog are blogspot.com and wordpress.com. If you do a blog, aim to write at least twice a month.

Social media

The use of social media is exploding and will continue to grow. It is a way of connecting with friends and colleagues, as well as others finding us. Therapists and others are increasingly finding ways to market via social media.

One of the most popular websites is YouTube.com. While it is primarily used for entertainment, more and more it is used for education and marketing. I think video has largely been underutilized by therapists.

Facebook.com has become another of the most popular websites. Some use it to keep in touch with friends and others use it for marketing. Use it for on or the other. If you want to use it for both purposes, use a personal email account for a Profile and a business email for a business Page.

Biznik.com is a business site, primarily for entrepreneurs. It is a way to network, especially with non-therapists.

Twitter.com is a source that you can announce publishing a paper, changes to your website, good books and articles, workshops that you might offer, etc. Many offer free things like recordings, articles, etc. It is another way to network with other professionals. It’s popularity is exploding.

Linksforshrinks.com is a site for therapists. Part of the impetus was to have another legitimate site where you could have a link to your website (the more links to your site, the better Google will find your site). It also has professional forums to discuss professional and marketing issues. There isn’t nearly as much information as in the forums for those who use the Psychology Today listing service, although that costs almost $30/mo, which has been a great resource and referral source for me.

Like most things, the more you invest in being involved with social media, the more you will benefit. If you are active, you can minimally expect some increase in website/blog traffic. This may or may not equate to client referrals.

Writing articles

Another way to develop a presence is to write self-help and other articles. A popular sites to submit articles is articlesbase.com. You can also submit to some of the listing and social media sites. When you write, distribute your writings in as many ways as you can. Post them on your website and blog. Have copies in your office waiting room. Fax copies, as is relevant with other fax communications. I routinely do this when I fax treatment updates to physicians. Offer copies to physicians, schools, clergy, etc.

Outside of the content, writings give others at least a glimpse of yourself. This is an opportunity to get to know, like, and trust you. The more that happens, the more people will come to you to help them achieve solutions.

Put your website address and contact information on everything

Make sure your address is on your business cards, stationary, fax sheets, etc. Just the fact that you have a website adds to your credibility, regardless if the receiver has the interest in checking it out. Create a “signature file” at the bottom of your email accounts. Minimally, include your web address, blog, etc. under your name, business address, business phone. Consider putting other information there, such as free offers, signing up for your news letter, etc. If you are going to start a group, give a talk, etc., consider including that information, while it is relevant, i.e., remove that information after it occurred.

In conclusion, you can’t do all of these things in a single day. However, you can complete some of these things Today. Keep reasonable expectations. When you do these things, it isn’t likely that you will have 10 people call you a week and want to self-pay. You will find that new clients will increasingly say, “I found you on the internet.” Marketing is a dynamic process. Generally, our efforts are cumulative.

This is not the end of marketing. You will probably want to expand into other low cost strategies, including purchasing a domain name for your website, using one or several paid listing services, etc. Continue to educate yourself about marketing and new avenues. Good luck and good marketing.

Direct Selling Tactics That Establish a Relationship Between the Buyer and Seller

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 25-10-2009

An extrovert has a genuine interest in his work and can communicate this interest with lots of enthusiasm. Because of this fact he is able to look on the brighter side of everything. Therefore, he can solve problems; his own or of his customers with efficiency, courtesy and diplomacy.

It is very important for a salesman to have a thorough knowledge of how his product will serve the needs of others, SO AS TO BE ABLE TO CONVINCE HIS CUSTOMERS. A sales person acts as the representative of his company and also helps improve its image. In direct selling, reactive questions asked by customers should be taken seriously. This can provide valuable information which can be explored in detail to help serve clients more efficiently.

Effective questioning skills to customers are also essential in direct selling and can be used to address critical issues throughout all stages of the trading process. Rather than the salesperson dominating the conversation and interaction, purposeful and planned queries are used to encourage prospective buyers to actively participate in a two-way collaborative discussion.

In response to statements from buyers, sales people ask related questions and paraphrase what the buyer has said to demonstrate their interest in and understanding of what the buyer wants.

The use of simple and direct questions allow salesmen to check back with the prospective customer to confirm that he/she has understood or agreed, and thus gain he/her commitment to make a deal.

They are applied in a manner that guides and moves the selling process forward in a logical progression till the sale is finally closed. Hence, effective questioning is the best way for a seller to get the attention of the customer and interaction in the conversation, so as to get relevant information.

Marketing Strategies and Tips to Reach Your Target Audience

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 25-10-2009

In order to increase and maintain its market share, a company must improve the quality of its goods and services. A well designed product that meets the demands of its customers is important for effective marketing but not enough to ensure marketing success.

Consumers need also to know that the product is available and must understand its benefits and advantage over the competition. Advertising should appeal to the feelings of customers. Price is probably the most common appeal. Others seek to arouse a desire for style, beauty and time-saving devices. While others are directed towards emotions, fears of being left out and pride of ownership.

When the role of advertising in a company promotion strategy is established, then the target audiences are selected. In addition, specific objectives are set, like setting a budget or choosing a mode of marketing, whose establishment enables advertising to fulfill its role. Business promotion is viewed as a communication process between the company and its target audience. Informing, reminding, and advocating are the purposes of business promotion component integrated in the marketing mix.

The marketing management must review the key strengths and weaknesses of each major marketing tool to emphasize the importance of blending the different tools into the advertising campaign.

Once a marketing plan has been reached, action to implement the promotion strategies needs to be taken immediately. Advertising is perhaps the most convenient tool of marketing as it reaches huge markets. Nevertheless, apart from advertising, other tools such as direct selling, publicity and sales promotion should also be applied. All these marketing tools should be appealing and convincing enough to attract customers.

How To Create A Landing Page For Your Affiliate Marketing Program

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 25-10-2009

One of the desirable features of affiliate marketing is that you do not necessarily need anything to make money.  You do not need a web site, your own product, or a plan for that matter.  However, it is highly beneficial if you do have a landing page for visitors and prospects to go to as this can drastically increase your sells.

Unlike what you may believe, there is much more to creating a landing page than quickly piecing together a simple web page and calling it good.  This is going to act as a sales page for you and your newfound business.  Therefore, you want to make the most of it.

The first thing to keep in mind with your landing page is that it should be as simple as possible.  You do not want to have too many products or advertisements distracting the visitor from the main product or service.  The easier it is for them to find the product and learn more, the better chance you have of generating a sell.  If need be, you may want to consider creating multiple landing pages so there is one for each product.

Utilize space with the landing page so it does not seem so cluttered and overwhelming.  If a visitor comes to your site and sees two or three paragraphs with 10-15 sentences in each paragraph, they are going to run.  Space out the content and consider using bullets as this will make the content easier to take in.

Make sure the content on your landing page is short and concise.  Let the product do the talking for you.  You mainly want to highlight how prospects will benefit from the product or service and what is in it for them.  No one wants to hear about how great your affiliate marketing program is.

While you do not want to overwhelm visitors with too many banners or graphics, using text links within the content and one or two banners on the side of the landing page can be beneficial.  You want the banner to take visitors directly to the product with a full summary of it and the text link should be connected to a sentence that highlights key benefits of the product.

The final tip to keep in mind when designing a landing page is to make it clear to the prospect how to get to the product page or order page so they can purchase what they are looking for.  You want to make it as easy as possible on the prospect so they do not have to scroll through the entire site just to find an order page.

Finding Keywords

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 25-10-2009

Are you a new webmaster? And looking for a niche place in the cyber world? Or simply looking for a great rating among the search results of major search engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN? In any case, you must indulge in finding keywords. Yes, by finding keywords, that are apt and according to your niche market, you will certainly be able to improvise on your search engine ranking.

The purpose of searching keywords is to find out the exact phrases that are requested by people in the searches carried in the major search engines. If your website has the relevant information about the most searched terms and keywords, your website would be rated higher by the major search engines. The entire process of improving search engine ranking for a website is a wide process and is called search engine optimization. Finding keywords is one of the most important parts of search engine optimization.

To start the keyword search for your website, make a list of the keywords related to your website. You can easily find the keywords by using online keyword services. One popular keyword service provider on the web is word tracker. Using word tracker tools and services, all you have to do is to type a keyword and wait for the list to appear on the computer screen. And you will you have a direct access to hundreds of keywords related to the keyword you have typed in the box.

For instance: your website is a website that markets and promotes skin products. Type the word “skin” and you will have all the top keywords related to skin. The keywords will be something like: skin care, oily skin, skin diseases, skin products, animal skin and so on.

Now you have to select the relevant keywords for your website. You cannot choose animal skin for your site which caters specifically to the human skin cosmetics and skin care. Yes you can include the keywords like skin care, skin cream, dry skin, oily skin and many others.

You have a number of keyword services and tools that can help you find the most searched keywords for your website. While you select the keyword with the help of these tools, you will also come to know how many number of times the keyword has been searched on the internet.

Let us go back to skin example: suppose you select dry skin, you can also track the exact number of times “dry skin” has been searched on the internet. The number can be some thousand times. Incase you choose “dry skin type”, the number of searches can be less. So, you are suggested to select the keyword with a higher search count first.

Another tricky method of finding keywords is to keep an eye on your competitors. Look at the meta-tags of your competitors’ website. The meta-tags are a good source of significant keywords. You can also seek help from your customers regarding the keywords they use in their search.

Having a weblog page in your website is also helpful in tracking the keywords. Each weblog page has a link which shows the keywords being used to search your page. Once you have the right keywords in hand, you can hit the market with the most relevant and desired information on your website.

Business Sales Promotion in Relation to Increase in Production Output

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 23-10-2009

Although companies selling products normally have actual and existing customers in mind, it is equally important that they should consider future or potential customers for their products. It follows that as a company expands, its profits should logically increase. Although it is sometimes difficult to ascertain whether expansion increases profits or vice verse, it all depends on the manner of expansion adopted.

Expansion in sales volume often requires more effort and more attention depending on the needs of the customers. More thought should go into the selling process and perhaps longer hours and greater effort must put into improving customer relationships and services. However, any such exercise must be closely monitored to ensure that the extra cost incurred does not exceed the additional sales made or the results will be negated.

This is because, thinking that profits will increase by the same margin as sales made, might actually be wrong. In reality, the increase in profit rarely rises constantly. A business owner can opt to lower total cost and so enable his/her business to operate with a higher profit margin to obtain a higher volume of business. Another option could be to lower prices or offer some other inducement; such as free delivery.

In these circumstances, the profit percentage may just fall. Is there an advantage in selling more products at a lower profit rather than fewer at a higher profit? How far is such a decision related to forecasts of future sales? Such questions should be pondered by any business management as they weigh the choices open to the organization. In addition, they should be able to predict what the market response might be at different volumes of sales and output, so as to make the best decisions.

Business Promotion Tip That Has to Be Embraced

Posted by | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 23-10-2009

Product mix decisions are usually the most important and fundamental of all marketing strategy decisions. Corporations are careful to coordinate product decisions to avoid the risk of stretching company resources into product-markets offering little competitive advantage. Thus a product policy must be formulated to which all decisions are tied.

One of the main marketing strategies employed in modern firms to great effect, is branding and packaging. A product brand stands out from other similar products being offered by competitors. It helps position an organization in terms of price level, quality, service and other factors that are critical in reaching the target market.

Buyers often use brand image as a proxy for quality and dependability, particularly if they find it difficult to evaluate a good because of its newness or complexity. Branding, as an important competitive strategy thus creates a basis for building customer brand loyalty.

Also, different brands may be used to serve different market niches. Items that are similar, with different brands present a variety of alternatives for buyers, hence increases sales in many markets.

However, it should not be concluded that a good must be branded, although there are numerous advantages to branding. With some goods, a name identity can be de-emphasized and emphasis placed on the marketing strategies elements such as low pricing.

The attributes to be included in each marketing policy vary a lot as each particular case is unique in its own right. The over-all product promotion has a major effect on the image of the organization, and that image as seen by customers helps spell success or failure.
