The Phone As A Marketing Tool (PART 1)

Using the phone as a marketing tool will be one of the most important skill sets to develop in your entrepreneurial pursuits. Having the ability to gracefully maneuver phone conversations when speaking with business prospects and partners will serve you in many beneficial ways and allow you to help others too. This article is meant to help you outline a few important logistics when using the phone as a marketing tool.
Get the Tools - Before fully diving into great conversation techniques, there are a few necessities to get right, before you even pick up the phone. First, it’s a great idea to have a headset, as you’ll likely be moving around, using your hands to emphasis topics you speak about, and/or to write information. Another reason for a headset is to keep yourself relaxed. Have you ever held the phone between your shoulder and ear for an extensive period of time? This is an incredible stress to your neck and shoulder muscles and easily avoidable with the use of a headset.
Next, as you will be speaking with people in different area codes and countries for any length of time, having a phone plan with unlimited minutes is optimal in order to keep yourself from worrying about conversation length. Create a list with all the phone numbers designated to their proper area code so you can keep track of the local time you’re calling. Another important part of using the phone as a marketing tool is having a simple and pleasant answering machine. Avoid funny or cute messages, to keep it professional, say it straight, simple, and with a smile.
Create A Distraction Free Zone- Finally, one of the biggest enemies and things to avoid in network marketer or home business building, is distraction. Before you’re on the phone, eat a snack, finish conversations with friends and family, send the email draft, and come to the end of the chapter in your book. As you’ve satisfied your hunger, your headset is on, take note of your working environment. The tele or radio should be turned off, there should be no other noise around you (including any type of music), put the dog in the other room, and keep the kids occupied with your significant other or start a game in another room for them. As you eliminate these distractions from where you’re working, you’ll be 100% available and able to communicate clearly with your prospects and business partners on the phone. When people know they have your attention, they’ll feel good about giving you their attention, resulting in trust and more effective conversation.
Once these steps are in place, look for the next part I write about using the phone as a marketing tool.
